The means:  Charter a new ASA or ASQ section on statistical leadership

 

Mission of the section

Help statisticians develop knowledge, skills and tools needed to become more effective leaders.

 

Specifics (what the section should do/provide):

 

  1. Source of examples on
    1. How to use stat techniques in a variety of environments
  2. Create a critical mass of people interested in “advancing the cause”
    1. Contributors of information needed
    2. Administrators
  3. Providing learning opportunities for those who want to learn
  4. Learning opportunities
    1. See action item list developed yesterday
    2. Venues – short courses, articles, books, videos, chat room, e-learning
    3. “Be innovative and think out of the box”
  5. Cadre of people who will present to executives the contributions of statisticians can make to an organization. Need a mixture of people from industry, academic and consulting
  6. Brochure/video/.ppt slide presentation of how statisticians and statistical studies have contributed in a variety of areas
  7. Elevator speech on how statistical thinking and methods can contribute to improving the performance of an organization
    1. Speeches on key topics by experts
    2. How to create an elevator speech for individuals
  8. PR initiative to publicize the contributions of statistical studies
    1. Example – Yale and Stanford statisticians who analyzed the Florida voting issue in 2000 Presidential election
  9. Help Center – “I have this problem, what method should I use? What should I be careful of? (e.g. www.IsixSigma.com)
